According to Professor Ruut Veenhoven, of the Erasmus University Rotterdam"There is a strong correlation between mental fitness and physical health. It is not fully known how these two interact. On the one hand, positive thinking cannot cure you of cancer or other serious illnesses. But a happy disposition makes you much less susceptible to becoming ill in the first place, it helps you recover and results in far greater longevity. " |
It's worth investing in wellbeing! This annual report continues the theme of the GGZ Knowledge Congress of 15 January 2009: ‘wellbeing’. Research results increasingly show that investing in wellbeing is worthwhile. Gains are made at individual, social and corporate level. After all, happy citizens perform better, behave more sociably and enjoy better health. |

Sooner or later in life, everyone will be confronted with setbacks and critical life events. This could be the death of a loved one or going through a divorce. It is becoming increasingly clear from research, that the way we deal with negative and traumatic life events has a lot to do with our genetic makeup (50%) and the development of our personality during childhood (40%). There is a lot of evidence that our ability to be happy is therefore largely pre-programmed. Nonetheless, the remaining percentage is of major importance for our happiness in life. By making the wrong choices, we can undermine our chance of happiness, no matter how positively disposed we may be. At the same time, it is also possible to increase your level of wellbeing, according to Prof. Jan Walburg, Chairman of the Trimbos Institute. It helps to think positively, and live a goal-oriented life, and know where you are heading and what you want to achieve. This attitude will strengthen your resilience and make you more resistant to setbacks. Furthermore, it’s a good idea to enjoy things in a conscious way, nurture relationships, adopt a healthy lifestyle and share your happiness with others. In our modern knowledge- and service-based economy, investing in happiness and wellbeing is no unnecessary luxury. From an economic and business point of view, our mental faculties constitute an indispensible production factor, which we should treat with care. Lasting mental health requires targeted prevention policy. Furthermore, it requires policy that is oriented towards early identification and timely intervention, to prevent mental health problems from developing into full-blown disorders. This is precisely the challenge for the mental health services. The Trimbos Institute has been working on the development of an online self-help programme that people can use to improve their mental fitness. Unlike many self-help books and courses available, it is important that this online programme should be a scientifically founded and proven effective intervention.
