Launch of website on improving the quality of care, www.trimbos.nl/verbeterdezorg. This site provides resources for professionals regarding lasting implementation of innovative work practices. An important element of the site is the Implementation Toolkit; this was initially created for participants in the recent Breakthrough projects Schizophrenia II, Anxiety Disorders and Double Diagnosis. There is also a digital monitor through which teams can obtain information about advancements in health care. The website was developed within the framework of the National Action Programme for Quality in mental health and addiction care "Getting better in mental health and addiction care"; this was an initiative of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, which was coordinated and financed by the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and development (ZonMw).
Press conference on the Dutch National Schools Survey ‘Youth and risky behaviour' at the lower secondary school Wellantcollege (VMBO) in Montfoort. An important finding from the research: there is a strong decline in alcohol use among 12-14 year olds. It appears that the (media) attention for alcohol use among adolescents and the focus on preventative activities in recent years have paid off. Indeed the level of alcohol use in this youngest group has now come down to almost the level of ten years ago. However, there has been no decline in alcohol use among youngsters aged 15 and older. The National Schools Survey is conducted every four years.
During the concluding session of the project ‘Trial implementation of an integrated approach to preventing depression in the elderly', the results of the approach in four districts in Leiden, Bergen op Zoom, Utrecht and Den Bosch were presented and discussed. Over 50 delegates from the fields of mental health prevention, municipal health services, primary health care, public health inspectorate and health insurers formulated the action plan for the further implementation of the integrated approach. An important element of this initiative is the training of the staff of Solidarnost (a rehabilitation centre for people with addiction problems) who are to man the helpline. They are trained in substance knowledge, motivating conversation techniques, how to deal with the media, learning to work from an evidence-based approach, which includes the use of databases. In addition to the phone-line and e-mail service, the initiative includes a website with a forum and chat service.

Filip Smit, senior lecturer and researcher with the Trimbos Institute, receives the award for ‘Best Dissertation 2007 CaRe'. His Ph.D thesis is subdivided into four research questions: Do we need depression prevention? Do we know where to start? What effect does it have? Is it cost-effective? Using case studies, he shows that it is possible to reduce the incidence of new depression by 30%. This implies not only a reduction in human suffering, but also a decline in costs.
